Cecil worked for Lipton's grocery store and Martin's Poultry before he joined the Artillery during World War II. He lost a lung when shot on Nijmegen Bridge during the battle to relieve Arnheim in Holland. Upon his return to England he was nursed back to health by his sister, Doreen. He later worked as a sawyer in a local sawmill, and married Guisappa Antonia Victoria Ellul on October 20, 1956. She had immigrated from Malta, and worked as a nanny for a doctor in Truro
