Shirley Hansford worked as a stenographer. She married Robert Oliver Parsons (b. October 2, 1935; d. May 21, 2011) on June 18, 1960. Shirley was very involved in the Norwood United Church, Alpha Iota Sorority, and volunteer work in the community. Her claim to fame was her beautiful quilting. Robert and Shirley had the following children:
- Sharon Elaine Parsons (b. July 13, 1964).
- James Robert Parsons (b. May 5, 1968)(adopted).
They separated in September, 1989.
